The Rise of Online Small Business Lending
How application portals, bank-data connections, and automated decisioning compressed a three-week process into an afternoon.

The gap that created the channel
Bank underwriting for a $75,000 request costs roughly the same as for a $750,000 request, which makes small requests structurally unattractive. Online lenders built cheaper decisioning and served the requests banks would not.
The result was not primarily cheaper capital — it was available capital, faster.
What technology actually changed
Digital applications replaced paper packages. Statement parsing and read-only bank connections replaced manual spreading. Rules engines and models handled the clear approvals and clear declines, leaving humans the middle.
Same-day funding became a routine operational outcome rather than an exception.
What it did not change
Cash flow still has to service the obligation. Faster decisions made it easier to get capital and no easier to repay it, which is why disclosure and stacking discipline became the industry's central issues.
Speed is a feature of the process. Whether the capital makes sense is still a judgment about the business.
